Student Erasmus+ Stories

Kwanyu Cheung
Studied on Erasmus at the CEU Universidad San Pablo, Madrid Spain (February – June 2025). Student on the BA (Hons) in Film and TV Production (Year 3).
Erasmus was a very good experience for me to learn and experience different cultures. Along the journey at CEU Universidad San Pablo, Madrid, I have made friends from different countries and cultures. I learned a lot from them and truly enjoyed our time together. Erasmus has expanded my knowledge of the world and it’s an experience I will cherish forever!

Mariela Machuca
Studied on Erasmus at the FH Joanneum, Austria (2024/2025) — Student on the BSc (Hons) in Computing in Software Development (Year3)
In my third year of my Software Development programme at DkIT, I decided to experience my external placement semester at the FH Joanneum Austria for my Erasmus.
Honestly, I couldn’t have done a better decision! My studies and adventure in Austria taught me a lot of new things, about myself and how I interact with people. It made me broaden my view and create opinions from a new perspective. It taught me that even if you are far away from people you love, it doesn’t mean you aren’t connected.
I met a lot of amazing people on my Erasmus, thanks to the several international activities my university had, everyone with a different personality! Some more similar to mine and others the complete opposite.
Thanks to the small amount of Erasmus students at the Austrian partner university I was able to create a small community where we had fun, and supported each other.
The students weren’t the only people who made my Erasmus, but the faculty too. I was able to take classes on topics I would have never thought I’d take, and the teachers were always open to teach and to learn from us.
I will definitely miss Austria and FH Joanneum, I hope some day I’ll be able to go back and relive my memories. But for now all I can say is that if you’re hesitant about going to an Erasmus experience, stop thinking and take a leap of faith, you’ll be able to experience things you never imagined!
I had the incredible opportunity in Year 2 of my DkIT programme to go on Erasmus to Austria to the Fachhochschule Salzburg. When I arrived, I was amazed by the city’s beautiful architecture and culture. Living and studying in Salzburg gave me the chance to meet people from all over the world, experience a different education system, and push myself out of my comfort zone.
I got to see a whole new part of the world, whether it was the charming old town, visiting the fortress or exploring the nearby snow cave with other Erasmus students.
In the span of one semester, I grew significantly as a person and now see things from a new perspective.
I believe Erasmus is one of the best opportunities colleges can offer to their students!

Matyas Tomin
Studied on Erasmus at the European University of Cypress, Nicosia — Student on theBSc (Hons) in Biopharmaceutical Science (Year 3 – 2024/2025)
My Erasmus experience in Cyprus in the spring semester of 2025 was one of the best decisions I have ever made during my DkIT studies!
I studied the Bioscience course, and the school exceeded my expectations with its professional approach and high standards. The campus was modern and even a bit luxurious, with excellent laboratories that supported my learning.
Beyond academic study, I met amazing people from all over Europe and I made friendships I hope will last a lifetime. I also explored Cyprus’s beautiful culture and landscapes, and enjoyed traditional Cypriot food which was phenomenal!
The culture, the weather, the people, and the school all came together to create unforgettable memories of my Erasmus study semester in Cyprus. If you asked me whether I would go again and choose Cyprus, I would not hesitate to say yes!
I went on Erasmus study abroad for two semesters to the Instituto Politecnico de Setúbal (IPS) in Portugal, in September 2024.
I was feeling both excited and a bit nervous about what was ahead. Right away, I noticed how different the teaching style was—classes felt more relaxed and less structured than what I was used to in Ireland or back at home in the Czech Republic. Most of my classmates were also Erasmus students, so it was easy to make friends and settle in, Integration days and social events really helped everyone get to know each other and made the whole experience feel welcoming from the start.
Living in a new country, first with a friend and then with someone I’d just met, taught me a lot about adapting to different habits and being flexible. I enjoyed exploring the city, spending time at student hangouts, and sharing moments like beach trips and karaoke nights with new friends from all over Europe. Over time, I got more comfortable presenting in front of others—a big step for me. There were challenges, like dealing with cultural differences and the slower pace of life, but those things made the year interesting and helped me grow. If you’re thinking about Erasmus, I’d recommend being open-minded, balancing your social life with some time for yourself, and making the most of every opportunity.
My time on Erasmus in IPS Setúbal made me more confident, independent, and gave me memories I’ll always value!

Billy Stafford
Studied on Erasmus at The Baltic Film and Media School (Tallinn University of Technology – Estonia) — Student on the BA (Hons) in Film and Television Production (Year 3)
Studying in Tallinn University of Technology on my Erasmus was an eventful six months. The college had so many facilities I took advantage of, such as the gym, sports hall and even a free sauna for students!
As a DkIT film student, studying in the Baltic Film and Media School was amazing! The college was slick and modern, situated just 10 minutes from the city centre. it was perfect!
The college dorms were only a 4-5min walk from the campus and had students from all corners of the world. Everyone in the dorms was so friendly and we often hosted "dorm dinners" every second week or so. Being from Dublin, I had to make them a pot of coddle!
Estonia is very pretty. I visited other cities in the country such as the second largest city, Tartu. I also travelled to nearby Riga in Latvia by bus and went to Helsinki in Finland by ferry. There were so many cool places to visit nearby. The "oldtown" (city center) in Tallinn was beautiful and a 10 minute tram ride away. From temperatures of -15 degrees when I arrived to a scorching 25 degree when I was leaving, you get all the seasons over there from snow to sun.
I would really recommend the Baltic Film and Media School for students thinking of going on Erasmus!

Vaclav Solc
Studied on Erasmus at the Universidad Politecnica de Valencia, Spain — Student on the BA in Digital Marketing and Public Relations (Year 3) – 2024/2025)
My Erasmus semester in Spain was an unforgettable experience! During the semester abroad, I learned so much about the Spanish way of life and especially lot about myself.
Moreover, thanks to Erasmus, I had an opportunity to study at one of the best business faculties in Spain and gain valuable knowledge and skills while developing professional connections.
Valencia is great city! It has great cultural life with lots of places to go for running, exercising or to enjoy the beach. During my stay, there were lots of festivals, celebrations and events taking place for students. Also, Valencia is surrounded by beautiful traditional towns, cities and nature.
Erasmus Study abroad was a great opportunity to practice and improve my Spanish language ability.
In my opinion, everyone should go on Erasmus at least once during their studies to step outside their comfort zone, gain a better understanding of diverse European cultures and meet people from all around the world!

Elisa Ricci
Studied on Erasmus Placement in Berlin — Student on the BA in Digital Marketing and Public Relations (Year 3) – 2024/2025
Elisa did a 4-month Erasmus Work-Placement at Laika Public Relations, Berlin (Spring 2025)
I’m so glad I decided to do my work placement experience through the Erasmus programme. I had the chance to do exactly what I was hoping for: gain real experience in the field I’m studying in, and immerse myself in a fascinating new culture!
Berlin is the perfect city for young people who are still figuring themselves out; it’s full of opportunities and constant inspiration! I would recommend it to everyone who is still unsure of their next steps! The city is very open and welcoming to other cultures, and it was reflected also in the PR office where I worked. My colleagues came from various continents, which created a dynamic, inclusive and inspiring atmosphere!
Erasmus was truly a life-changing experience!"

Rebecca Higgins
Completed Erasmus Placement at Worcester Acute Hospital NHS Trust - England — Student on the BSc (Hons) in General Nursing (Year 3) - 2024/2025.
My Erasmus hospital placement in Worcester was an incredibly enriching experience. It gave me the opportunity to learn from diverse healthcare professionals and immerse myself in a different clinical environment.
I enjoyed the hands-on experience, which allowed me to expand my academic and clinical knowledge.
There were so many learning opportunities for me; I was extremely well looked after by everyone at the partner college (University of Worcester) and at the hospital.
The university staff were very helpful in making me feel welcome and involved me in student activities and events in the university. The hospital staff were very student-orientated and involved me in many different clinical areas in the hospital like theatre, oncology, renal, cardiac catheter labs and enabled me to get time with clinical nurse specialists of these specialties.
Worcester is a lovely city and very welcoming. I am so glad that I chose to do my Erasmus placement there!
Erasmus was a rewarding and transformative experience that will stay with me throughout my personal life and career.

Regina Dzsupin
Studied on Erasmus at the University of Maia, Portugal — Student on the BA (Hons) in Film and Television Production (Year 3)
I am Regina Dzsupin, a third-year student from the Dundalk Institute of Technology’s Film and Television Production course. During the spring semester of my second year, I was on a study abroad programme at the University of Maia. The roughly six months that I spent in Portugal turned out to be an amazing journey, which I am incredibly grateful for.
Before arriving to the University of Maia, I was given the details of the Erasmus coordinators. They were very nice, and they answered all my questions about the modules and the assessment requirements. At the receiving institution the classes were not in English, however the teachers were conscious about me, they always explained the material or the task so that I could follow along. Some of them provided specific notes for foreign students and others simply translated what they were presenting. The workload was different from what I was used to, but it was not easier or harder than in my home university. Not all the modules corresponded exactly to what I would have studied in Ireland, yet I think this was beneficial as I was able to acquire skills in more diverse areas.
I think the study abroad semester was a great choice because, besides approaching my study field from other perspectives, I was also able to familiarise myself with a different culture. The Portuguese language, history, architecture and culinary were all worth to try and experience. The university itself was in a small town, next to the city of Porto which was easily accessible by public transport. The receiving institution provided a free public transportation card, which I could use unlimitedly until the last day of my stay.
To summarise, I would recommend Erasmus to those who are open to new experiences, adventures and challenges. In my opinion it is so much more than just studying in a different city for a few months. It is a change in mentality, lifestyle and scenery that can inspire and motivate students for reaching their goals. I believe that everyone in their lifetime must experience living in another country as it provides memories that will be cherished forever.
