Course Overview

This course encompasses everything from pre-production planning and scriptwriting to filming, editing, and postproduction. Students will learn to harness creativity, innovation, and collaboration, and the practical aspects of mounting a production, such as budgeting, location scouting, casting, production design, filming, and post-production. Students will learn in our state-of-the-art TV studio and be part of multiple practical projects to put their skills into action. Students can specialise in areas such as Documentary Film Production and Drama Production for Film and Television in their final year project.

Students benefit from the guidance of industry experts, participate in competitions for the annual Samson Films Prize and Dearbhla Walsh Prize, and secure employment in renowned companies like the BBC and Universal. The course is housed in the state-of-the-art Carroll's building on the DkIT Campus, providing students with an ideal environment to create exceptional work. In Year 3, students embark on an industry work placement that will enhance their skills and broaden their professional network.

Work placement

In Year 3 students undertake a 4 week work placement with Film & TV companies across Ireland and further afield.

Blackmagic Design: World-renowned Blackmagic Design is a key education partner for this dynamic course, training professionals in Film & Television Production. DkIT is one of only 10 key Education Partners with Blackmagic Design in Europe and is the only Irish Educational Partner.

AVID Learning Partner: Avid Technology is a multimedia company that specialises in video and audio editing software. Avid products include Media Composer, its flagship non-linear editing system, and Pro Tools, its digital audio work station. Avid has received prestigious awards including two Oscars, a Grammy and 16 Emmys. The Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music is an established Avid Learning Partner (ALP) with Lecturers who are Avid Certified in both Media Composer and Pro Tools.

Education Progression

Graduates of the programme may wish to pursue their education further leading to the award of a MA or PhD.

Graduates with an Honours Degree (Level 8) qualification (minimum 2nd class honours) are eligible to undertake postgraduate studies at Masters level in a relevant area. There are a range of DKIT accredited Masters (Level 9) taught programmes available. Postgraduate research opportunities, either a Research Masters or PhD are also available within the Department of Creative Arts, Media & Music at DKIT.

Entry requirements

In addition to the standard entry requirements below, English Grade 03 or H6. Applicants from NI/UK require a GCSE English Grade A or AS Level Grade C or A Level Grade D. A Pass at A-Level in Moving Images Arts with GCSE English Grade C or AS English Grade E is also accepted.
