DkIT Lecturer’s Contribution to ‘The Troubles a Dublin Story’ Film

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) are proud to report that one of their lecturers Colm Mullen was Director of Photography and Lead Editor on the recent released film ‘The Troubles a Dublin Story’.

The Troubles a Dublin Story is a hidden history story, based on true accounts of those involved, it explores rarely discussed events during The Troubles from the perspective of two working class brothers growing up in North Dublin in the 1980s 

 

Far removed from the horrors of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, but shocked by the atrocities they witness on television, they are naively drawn into the complex world of republicanism, gangsterism, the inevitable hypocrisy of the cause and the personal and moral consequences that entailed. The opening scenes of the film on New Street in Dundalk. This location was used to recreate Belfast in the 1980's.  

Colm Mullen is a cinematographer, visual artist, and educator. His work is collaborative and immersive and seeks collective exploration of social phenomenon. He explores ideas connected with identity, memory, community, and place. He has designed arts and health-based recovery programmes through the medium of film, photography, and animation in collaboration with the HSE and other support agencies.

Colm was cinematographer on writer/director Frank Berry’s feature drama film, ‘I USED TO LIVE HERE’ which was nominated for three IFTA awards including best film and won best first feature at the Galway Film Fleadh.  

Colm was cinematographer and editor on ‘LAST BREATH’ a film artwork by visual artist Marie Brett which partnered with and exhibited at The Irish Museum of Modern Art, (2018). Colm was selected as Filmmaker in residence in An Táin Arts Centre, Dundalk in 2022.

He currently lectures in cinematography and screenwriting at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DKIT) and is a co-founder and artistic director of the Louth International Film Festival. He is also an invited member of the IFTA academy’s prestigious cinematography chapter.  

The Troubles a Dublin Story had its world premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh and its North American premiere at the prestigious Newport Beach Film Festival, where it secured worldwide distribution. The film that was recently released in Ireland and the UK through High Fliers Film distribution (UK) and MPX Distribution (US) and will be released across North America in early March.

'THE TROUBLES A DUBLIN STORY'  will be available on DVD and to view online on iTunes, Amazon, Sky, Vubiquity-Virgin, Google and Microsoft in Ireland and UK on 26th February 2024.
