Orla is passionate about Germs! She loves to share stories about the GOOD germs reassuring children that microbes are generally good and exist to help us. This is particularly important after the Covid pandemic and the resulting hygiene anxiety that has developed for some children.
Orla will talk about those trillions of super microbes in your gut that do truly amazing things for us every day. Your class will learn how to keep their bugs happy and healthy and how to feed them! Yum.
Secondary School
Duration: 1 Hour
Orla has lectured on various Science, Veterinary Nursing, General Nursing, Food Science, Pharmaceutical and Medical programmes in various colleges in Ireland, Denmark and Australia.
If your students are interested in pursuing a science career and would like to participate in a careers Q&A session with Orla, she would be delighted to meet them. In addition to various academic positions Orla has worked in various roles from retail sales, school teacher, lab technician, technical medical sales and research. She would be delighted to share her journey through college (beginning in DkIT and returning to DkIT !) and her career beyond.
Alternatively, a visit by Orla to your class can be curriculum lead through Home Economics and Biology subjects, where topics such as Microbes, Microbiomes food and nutrition, health and disease can be brought to life through interactive fun classroom or The Germ Lab-based laboratory activities.
