DkIT was established as Dundalk Regional Technical College in 1969, with the aim of providing technical and vocational education to the region. Over the years, the campus expanded to accommodate a growing student population and diversify its academic offerings.

The South Building emerged as part of this expansion, designed to house the Department of Management and Financial Studies and provide essential student support services.

The South Building was constructed to meet the increasing demand for business and management courses. Its design includes lecture theatres, classrooms, and offices tailored to facilitate effective teaching and learning in these disciplines.

Additionally, the building incorporates student amenities such as The Well Café, enhancing the campus experience.
