North Building

The North Building at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) is home to the School of Engineering and some parts of Department of Life & Health Sciences. Designed to support practical, hands-on education, it features specialist classrooms, workshops, and laboratories tailored for engineering and applied science programmes.

This dynamic learning environment equips students with the technical skills and experience needed for careers in sectors such as mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering, bridging theory with real-world application.

Facilities

Garage Labs

The Garage Labs are dedicated automotive workshops where students gain practical experience in vehicle diagnostics, engine systems, and mechanical maintenance. These labs replicate real-world garage environments and support DkIT’s engineering and motor technology programmes.

Electrical Labs

Equipped with specialist tools and instrumentation, the Electrical Labs support hands-on learning in circuit design, power systems, and electrical engineering. Students work on real-world projects to develop practical skills essential to the electrical and electronics industries.

Technical Drawing Labs

Our Drawing Labs provide students with the space and tools to develop key design and drafting skills. These labs support both manual and computer-aided drawing (CAD), forming a core part of engineering, architecture, and design programmes.

Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Suites

These specialist computing labs are equipped with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and Revit. Students in engineering and design disciplines use these suites to create, simulate, and refine technical designs and 3D models.

Coffee Dock

Located centrally in the North Building, the Coffee Dock offers a relaxed social space for students and staff. Serving light refreshments, snacks, and coffee, it’s a popular spot to meet between classes or recharge during a busy day.

North Building History

DkIT was initially established as Dundalk Regional Technical College, with planning beginning in the early 1960s. Construction of the campus on Dublin Road commenced in 1968, and the college opened its doors to students in September 1969, although the official opening took place in 1971. The North Building was among the original structures constructed during this period, serving as a central facility for technical and vocational education.

Over the years, the North Building has undergone various refurbishments to accommodate the growing needs of the institution. Notably, a significant redevelopment project was undertaken to expand the building's capacity and modernize its facilities.

This included the addition of the Jocelyn Bell Burnell Science Building, a two-story extension comprising various laboratories for multipurpose use, cell culture, agriculture, chemistry, and pharmaceutical studies. The extension was officially opened in November 2023, with funding of €18.47 million provided by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science .
