DkIT Event and Hospitality Management students raise €1300 for Irish Cancer Society’s annual Breast Cancer Campaign
Third-year Event and Hospitality Management students at Dundalk Institute of Technology, alongside their tutors Lorraine Dunne and Maria Roddy-Freyne, have once again made a remarkable impact by raising €1,300 for the Irish Cancer Society’s annual Breast Cancer Campaign. This achievement was made possible through a fundraising event organised as part of their course.

The students hosted a Big Pink Coffee Morning along with lots of other fun activities and organised a raffle with lots of wonderful prizes. They also ran an awareness campaign and breast check. Maria herself is a breast cancer survivor and has been running these events with the Event Management students since 2014 after she herself went through treatment.
Speaking after the event, Maria Roddy-Freyne said:
“The students had a great time at the event, which not only raised money for an important cause but also served as a valuable team-building experience. They were proud of their achievements and found it an excellent opportunity to apply what they’ve been learning in their course. Breast cancer is a cause close to my heart, with nearly 3,400 women and about 30 men diagnosed annually in Ireland. Early detection is crucial, and raising awareness is vital. Every euro counts in making a difference in the lives of breast cancer patients across the country.”
The Events and Hospitality Management team shared their gratitude for the continued support and commitment to their chosen charity. Through the collective efforts and support of everyone in the DkIT community, they have been able to raise an amazing total of €16,000 over the past 11 years since beginning this event.
Lorraine Dunne, Lecturer in the Department of Hospitality Studies said:
“It is amazing to see a fundraising event like this Big Pink Coffee Morning be delivered by our Event & Hospitality Management students, with just a few short weeks of planning. The students planned this event from start to finish and their enthusiasm in making this event as successful as possible was evident from the beginning. I am really proud of their achievements in delivering the event and raising awareness and money for a very worthy charity.”
The team wished to thank the many businesses who sponsored wonderful prizes for the raffle including: Breastcare by Alison, Castle Leslie Estate, Eire Hobbies, Peggy Moore's, Panama Coffee, Dundalk Number One Jocelyn Bistro, Dollyrosegrazes and many more.
The event provided a wonderful opportunity for students to put their event management and hospitality skills to the test and also contribute to such an important cause.
Crisalis Gabri Ulloa Lovos, a year three Hospitality Management student said:
“It was my first time participating in a fundraising event, it was good to see everyone wearing pink and working together to raise awareness about breast cancer and to raise funds for such a good cause. Thanks everyone for the support that they gave to our fundraising event.”
Aimee Newman, a Year three Event Management student added:
“It was amazing to be able to organise a fundraising event in aid of Irish cancer society and spread awareness for breast cancer. Seeing all the faculty, students, and community of DKIT supporting the cause was fantastic. I am very proud of my fellow classmates and the event we created which helped raise a sizable amount for breast cancer awareness.”
