About Student Accommodation Assistance
The Student Accommodation Assistance is to assist students from Traveller and Roma backgrounds and those with experience of the care system with the cost of accommodation, when living independently, while attending third level education.
The funding is to alleviate the cost of accommodation as a barrier to accessing and progressing through higher education.
Eligible students can apply for their rental costs up to a maximum of €6,000 per academic year, this includes costs for leases of 51 weeks/12months duration.
Students who only require accommodation for one semester, can apply for their rental costs up to a maximum of €3,000.
To be eligible for Student Accommodation Assistance, students must:
- Be a member of one or more of the following groups:
- Traveller Community
- Roma Community
- Have experience of the Care System between the ages of 12-18years and not in receipt of an Aftercare Allowance
- Traveller Community
- Be living independently for the purpose of attending third level education, this includes students renting away from home with leases covering up to 12 months duration.
- Not be in receipt of another accommodation support, example, HA, Rent Supplement or other.
- Reside in, on or off-campus student specific accommodation, private rental accommodation, house shares or “digs” accommodation.
The Student Accommodation Assistance is not provided for mortgage costs or rent for Social Housing.
- Be registered on a full-time or part-time, higher education course of not less than one year in duration, that leads to a higher education award from level 6-10 of the NFQ.
PhD student can apply during the first four years of their studies.
As part of the application process students must provide:
- Evidence of their tenancy/license agreement. This agreement must clearly outline Rental Costs per month.
- If a rental agreement is not available, roof of rent payments is required. Samples of proof include:
- Bank statement showing rental payments
- Receipt of rent payments
- Bank statement showing rental payments
