Seán Mac an tSíthigh on Video Journalism in the Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music Visiting Guest Series
07 February 2017The Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music Visiting Guest Series continues on Thursday 9 February at 3pm in P1078 with a workshop by Seán Mac an tSíthigh entitled: ‘Video Journalism’. Through the Department's collaboration with RTÉ we are delighted that our students will be meeting with Seán who is an award-winning video journalist. He sources, films and edits his own news stories for RTÉ’s Six One and 9 News bulletins, as well as Nuacht RTÉ and Nuacht TG4. His work has covered local news, refugee/migrant issues, the Paris terrorist attacks, and the 2016 U.S. elections.
Seán has filmed, produced, directed and presented a number of documentaries for TG4 in the past; Sherpa (2012), Misinéir na nDuganna: The Priest, The Mob, The Movie (2011) and Fear Bán na Slumanna (2008). He is also the studio presenter on TG4’s folklore series ‘Béaloideas Beo’.
This masterclass will provide students with a unique insight in to life as a video journalist. The advantages of ‘the one-man-band’ approach to TV news gathering will be discussed in the context of a rapidly changing media landscape. Various shooting techniques and interview styles will be demonstrated. The emerging value of filming with a mobile phone and the rapid growth of Mobile Journalism (MOJO) will also be discussed. Seán will discuss the practical challenges/benefits of sourcing, recording, editing and sending news items from isolated rural locations. The workshop will also explore storytelling techniques, placing emphasis on the engaging and intimate style of video journalism. The talk will be illustrated by some of Seán’s news items from rural West Kerry and Cork, as well as some of his international work, such as his reports on the refugee/migrant crisis in the Mediterranean, and the recent American election.
