Film students get amazing opportunity to attend Prosthetics and Make-up Masterclass hosted by the National Talent Academy
Four film students recently got the rare opportunity to attend a professional masterclass hosted by the National Talent Academy Crew East, a Screen Ireland initiative.
It was an amazing opportunity for the students to network with film professionals and watch live demonstrations by international make-up and prosthetic artists, Brandi Boulet & Matt Aebig.
Some of Brandi’s credits include; Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Apple TV+’s SEE, The Grudge and The Craft: Legacy. Matt’s credits include; Star Trek, The Grudge and SEE.
The demonstrations were followed by an open conversation about career development, leadership and moving between make-up and prosthetic roles.
During the demonstrations, Brandi and Matt took the group through a complete alien transformation, from preparing and applying the prosthetics through to painting and finishing the character. They spoke about the creative choices, the application process and how prosthetics, makeup and hair work together, with the whole process taking over 5 hours.
This was a unique chance for the lucky students to participate in such an exciting initiative. Training events are not normally open to full-time students. As the training location was able to fit a larger number than usual, there were some spare slots, which were offered to the fortunate DkIT students. Further training will be open to these students and their classmates once they have completed their full-time education.
It was such a fantastic opportunity for all involved.
Ariel Drew a Fourth Year student said:
“The chance to see such artwork being made right in my sight was remarkable. Not only did I see the whole process, but I also met lots of artists who share the same interests with me and we got to discuss the process in an approachable and warm environment.”
Third year student Adam Coates, described the masterclass as hugely beneficial.
“I learned the correct way to apply a prosthetic right down to what adhesives and chemicals the pros use. I learned techniques that I never would have thought to use such as stencil detailing and they even shared details of the equipment they use such as the brand of airbrushes, brushes and paint. These guys really were masters, and it was so impressive watching how skilled they were, taking this girl and transforming her into a species from another world. Not only that but the event turned out the be a great place to network and meet others with an interest in special effects make up and more. The event was a great experience overall.”
Second Year Tyrone Kearns added:
“It was fantastic getting to meet with people who had created creature looks on some of my favourite shows and films, plus it was a great networking opportunity and chance to meet so many people from so many areas of the industry.”
Fellow Second Year Colm McClelland also thoroughly enjoyed the experience and said:
“The class was very friendly and welcoming and amazingly informative not just about the process the artists go through but how the industry works as well. Being on set and the creative process was fantastic. It was also an amazing networking opportunity to meet other link minded people starting or expanding their careers.”
