DkIT Computing Students Play Big in Portugal

The project was hosted by the Portuguese college ISPGAYA in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. The project included students from ISPGAYA, DkIT, Artesis Plantijn University College of Antwerp, Belgium and Valencia Polytechnic University, Spain.

Titled “Building Energy-Independent Solutions for Sustainable Communities”, the project focused on the development of serious computer games designed to educate secondary school students about sustainable, energy-independent communities.

A strong emphasis was placed on promoting multicultural collaboration and enhancing students’ soft skills. Participants were organised into international teams, with each team comprising students from all participating institutions.

The project was cross-disciplinary in nature. Irish and Portuguese students brought expertise in computer science, Spanish students contributed knowledge from electrical engineering, and Belgian students specialised in sustainability management. This combination allowed teams to integrate domain expertise in sustainability and energy systems with strong game development skills.

The project was funded through the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme.
