Course Overview

Cybersecurity is one of the fastest-growing fields in technology, and demand for skilled professionals across Ireland and beyond has never been higher. This course gives students the technical depth and practical experience to meet that demand head-on, building a strong foundation in networking, systems administration and programming before progressing to advanced topics including ethical hacking, penetration testing, forensic computing, cloud security and security operations.

In third year, students take on a group project to design and build a Computing Infrastructure — then defend, attack and monitor it. Students also gain real-world experience through a work placement or semester abroad, putting these skills into practice in a professional environment.

The final project brings it all together through a mix of advanced exploitation techniques, security data analytics and governance — preparing students to hit the ground running as a cybersecurity professional.

Understanding the Industry

Cybersecurity is one of the most in-demand fields in Ireland right now — and the gap between supply and demand is growing. Ireland's cybersecurity sector employs around 8,000 professionals across 535 firms, contributing €2.7 billion in annual revenue to the Irish economy. Yet demand continues to outpace supply. Almost one in four companies in Ireland are experiencing difficulties recruiting staff with cybersecurity skills.

The outlook is equally striking. The sector's workforce is projected to rise to 17,000 by 2030, meaning an additional 1,000 people per year will need to be trained, upskilled or recruited in the coming years.

Work placement

In third year, students will have the opportunity to put everything they've learned into practice through a full semester work placement with a real employer. This is one of the most valuable parts of the course — giving students hands-on industry experience, professional contacts and a track record before you even graduate.

Alternatively, students can avail of a semester abroad through the Erasmus+ Programme.

Professional Accreditations

Students will have the opportunity to gain industry certifications, including the CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) and Cisco CyberOps Associate.
