Course Overview
This course develops expertise in nutrition which can be applied to the areas of health science, food and health promotion. Students who are passionate about improving human health through better nutrition and disease prevention, will gain an excellent grounding in both scientific and applied health nutrition on this course. By addressing how diet, lifestyle and physical activity contribute to health, wellbeing and the prevention of major preventable diseases, students of this course will develop specialist skills to work as a nutritionist or a food scientist.

Understanding the Industry
As people are now aiming more at having a healthy lifestyle and making conscious food choices; nutrition as an industry is growing rapidly. While Ireland and most of the developed world are experiencing the longest lifespans of their populations, they’re also experiencing the highest levels of chronic diseases. Diet and lifestyle are two of the key factors that drive these diseases, making it more crucial than ever for people to maintain a well-balanced diet and a good exercise routine for optimal health.

Work placement
There is a semester-long work placement included in Year 3 of this course. Placement takes place in a suitable nutrition, food or health-related setting. Students will become active members of a multidisciplinary team and learn from experience through supervised practice. Experiential learning in this way provides an opportunity for students to engage in reflective practice and enrich personal and professional development.
Education Progression
Graduates will be eligible to apply for taught postgraduate Level 9 programmes in related areas such as Nutrition, Health Promotion or Dietetics or postgraduate research programmes at Level 9 or 10.

Entry requirements
In addition to the standard entry requirements below, a Laboratory Science subject at Grade O6 or H6 is also required. Applicants from NI/UK require a GCSE pass in a Laboratory Science subject (Biology, Chemistry or Physics) or GCSE Grade CC in Double Award Science. Single award GCSE Science is not applicable.

Advanced Entry & Transfer Applications
Advanced Entry is for applicants who have previous educational achievements and/or work experience and want to be considered for direct entry into year 2, 3, or 4 of a course. This includes students looking to transfer to DkIT from another Higher Education provider.
International Application (non-EU)
International Applicants (not from or living in the EU) can apply through an agent or directly to DkIT to study this course.
