DkIT launches new Data Analytics qualifications

27 July 2018

DkIT recently launched a new suite of part-time courses in Data Analytics aimed at addressing the shortage of professional specialists in this area.

In an ever growing digital age, with the explosion of social media channels, cloud-based platforms and connected devices, society is now faced with the challenge of how to manage and analyse the reams of data and insights on human behaviour available. Moreover, with Ireland becoming a central hub of activity for digital giants such as Facebook and Google, the demand for skilled graduates is being felt now more than ever, with an increasing need for numeracy, mathematical skills and an ability to conduct effective data analytics, particularly in technologically advanced industries. Skills Ireland estimates that there will be a demand for Big Data/Analytics roles to the tune of 49,000-62,000 in Ireland by 2020.

Discussing the skills gap and the need for more specialised qualifications, Head of Lifelong Learning at DkIT, Anton Barrett said:

The analytics sector is undergoing significant growth in Ireland and employers are increasingly feeding back that they need people with deep analytical skills in both the areas of business and computing. Our new suite of part-time courses in this area aims to help fulfil this skills requirement in the region.

Dr. Fiona Lawless, lecturer from the Department of Computing Science and Mathematics at DkIT, commented,

DkIT has recognised the need to address this gap, by introducing more specialised courses, tooling up our new generation of DkIT students to tap into this growing and in-demand jobs sector,” says Dr. Lawless. “This suite of Data Analytics programmes is the first to be offered in the North Leinster and South Ulster region. The practical and hands-on courses have been designed in direct consultation with employers, with a range of blended learning options that provide flexibility for our students.

The programme consists of three new qualifications, the Certificate in Data Analytics for Business, Level 7; the Higher Diploma in Science in Data Analytics, Level 8 and the Certificate in Data Analytics, Level 8.

The Certificate in Data Analytics for Business, Level 7, has been developed with non-technical candidates in mind, to enable them to utilise data for operational and strategic decision making in business. The course will be delivered across one semester, on a part-time basis.

The Higher Diploma in Science in Data Analytics, Level 8 is designed for Level 8 graduates with strong numeracy skills. This course will equip participants with the theoretical and practical skills to enter the world of data analytics. The two year, part-time course will be delivered as an evening & weekend programme.

For those applicants who cannot commit to the two year Higher Diploma programme, DkIT also offers the Certificate in Data Analytics, Level 8, a 20 credit course delivered part-time over one year. Also designed for graduates with strong numeracy skills, the Certificate in Data Analytics offers a subset of the more technical year one modules from the Higher Diploma programme. It provides an excellent opportunity to those wishing to develop the skills, expertise and knowledge of this specialised area, but from whom the Higher Diploma is not a suitable option.

Both the Certificate in Data Analytics for Business and the Higher Diploma in Science in Data Analytics have the added advantage of being subsidised through the Government’s Springboard+ Scheme, leading to significantly reduced tuition fees for eligible participants.
