DkIT Event Management Students Host 'Succeeding in Business' Industry Seminar

06 March 2019

3rd year Event Management students at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) today hosted an industry seminar ‘Succeeding in Business – advice from industry experts’, with speakers including award-winning restauranteur and media personality Neven Maguire, Tom McDermott, Director of Operational Excellence for Europe, Africa & Middle East for Hilton and Madeline Riley, General Manager of The Radisson Blu Royal Hotel on Golden Lane in Dublin City Centre. Part of their final year ‘event execution’ module, the seminar provided the setting for the students to deliver a successful event, in order to demonstrate proficiency in planning, organisational and promotional skills.

Speaking at the event, Madeline Riley, General Manager, Radisson Blu Royal Hotel Dublin commented:

Thank you so much for the invitation to today’s event. I had an amazing day. I was so inspired by the visit and it really motivated me to think outside the box in business. It is so great to get out of my work environment to get new ideas. It was great to be around such amazing students and very clear to see that there was a lot of key talent which I spotted whilst being there a short time. Your idea of this event was great, gives the students brilliant ground work for real life. “

The industry speakers each gave a talk on their experiences throughout their careers, CV & interview tips and advice on how they balance their personal life with their hectic careers. Neven Maguire, shared his experience as one of Ireland's most famous chefs and known for his incredible MacNean Restaurant and House, his 12 cookbooks and his TV show 'Home Chef'. In business for over 32 years, Tom McDermott captivated the audience with stories from his global work in almost 100 countries. Finally, Madeline shared a wealth of experience in the hospitality industry, having worked within the Irish & UK hotel market for many years, working for some of the world’s leading hotel brands including DeVere, Hilton and Radisson. Madeline’s diverse skillset has been developed through working across a wide range of areas within the hotel function.

Speaking about the seminar, DkIT Lecturer Maria Roddy Freyne commented:

“Our 3rd year Event Management students were given total autonomy for this event, enabling them to gain valuable industry skills, providing an opportunity for them to network with industry specialists and giving them an insight into how to succeed in their careers.”
