DkIT’s Sound Sensation Event
18 December 2023The Music Department welcomed students, staff and fellow members of the DkIT community to hear and explore the campus in a unique way through a series of sound events. On the day participants were encouraged to explore the sonic richness of the DkIT campus through the ‘Hearing and Sounding a Diverse Campus’ N-TUTORR project. The N-TUTTOR project is a national project with a mission to transform learning and teaching and this event was music to student’s ears as this project brought a series of interconnect sound events to an all-day occasion.
The ‘Hearing and Sounding a Diverse Campus’ project’s aim was to highlight the often-ignored sonic aspects of day-to-day life at DkIT, and the diverse ways in which individuals interact with the campus as a unique soundscape. The project team was a fabulous alliance of students from the BA (Hons) Music, BA (Hons) Audio and Music Production, and BA Events Management programmes who collaborated closely with lecturers.
The day began with participants being invited to download an app to their phones and journey through the campus. Participants then explored how to create immersive AR audio experiences using a free platform to create soundwalks, audio walks, guided tours, and musical experiences. Using the DkIT campus as a location and source of inspiration, participants then shared their experience through a facilitated discussion.
A workshop on using ambient sounds in songwriting also took place in association with DkIT’s recently formed Songwriting Club. This was then followed by Christmas Carols in the Costa area of the Carroll Building with the DkIT Choir. At lunchtime, performances showcasing all the musical talent in the Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music were held in the Fr McNally Recital Room. The DkIT Choir and Musical Theatre students also performed a mix of seasonal repertoire and Broadway hits.
In the afternoon, audio and musical artists from across the campus participated in performances of their music in the Costa area. Bands, DJs and songwriters enhanced the aural environment of the campus with their creativity from 2pm. This was followed by a session in association with the DkIT Traditional Music Society.
