Course Overview
This MSc in Building Surveying is designed for those interested in a career as a Building Surveyor or an Assigned Certifier. It is targeted at those currently working in the industry wishing to upskill or for graduates with a related (cognate) qualification who wish to convert to a career in Building Surveying.
The MSc is delivered Full-Time over 3 semesters (1.5 years), or Part-Time over 6 semesters (3 years).
This programme addresses all the qualification requirements set down by the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI) and upon completion, graduates may undertake the SCSI Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) to become a Chartered Building Surveyor and thereafter act as an Assigned Certifier.
Career Opportunities
Building Surveyors are involved in activity across every built environment sector including residential, commercial, industrial and health and specialise in construction technology, building pathology, measurement and analysing design and building defects. For this reason, the Building Surveying profession is critically important in advising clients about energy performance, building control regulations and remediation of legacy defects such as pyrite.

Research conducted by the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI) indicates a clear demand for Building Surveyors at all levels (graduate, junior, senior and associate).
Course Delivery and Modules
The MSc is delivered alongside the Postgraduate Diploma in Building Surveying, Full-Time (2 days per week over 1 year) or Part-Time (1 day per week over 2 years), followed by a research dissertation. The research dissertation takes 1 year (Full-Time) or 2 semesters (Part-Time).
The course is delivered 100% online, Monday and Friday, within the hours of 9 am – 5 pm.

Work placement
Relevant work experience is recommended for students learning.
Students with a cognate degree and in suitable employment may complete the Industrial Practice module within their existing place of work. Students either without a cognate degree or without suitable employment will complete the Work Placement module, supported by DkIT Work Placement Office.
Professional Accreditations
Professional Accredited by the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI) and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
Education Progression
Graduates can carry out additional industry training, register for the Assessment of Professional Competence and train to become a Chartered Building Surveyor.
Successful completion of the MSc programme can lead to further progression within industry, or to further level 10 / PhD pathways.
Fees and Funding
EU Fees:
- Full-time / Part-time (EU): €7,650
- Please Note: If students have completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Building Surveying at DkIT the EU fee for the remaining MSc element is €2,550, meaning the total cost of the MSc is from €3,050.
Non-EU Fees:
- Full-time / Part-time (Non-EU): €12,000

Entry requirements
- Entrants should have a minimum of a 2nd class honours degree in Architecture, Architectural Technology, Estate Management, Civil Engineering or a related (cognate) area.
- Applicants who do not meet these requirements but have relevant work experience may be assessed for entry in line with the DkIT RPL Policy and Procedures. Learn about RPL
- International students must have a minimum level of English equivalent to IELTS 6.5. Candidates may be interviewed.
