This module is designed to give learners a focused insight into the skills and experience required to navigate Further and Higher Education.

Course Delivery and Modules

The course is delivered for 12 sessions on campus.

It is held on 1 morning a week between 10-13. Usually Wednesdays. 

  • Managing Fears and Expectations
  • Writing for Third Level
  • Note Taking
  • ICT Skills – Word, PowerPoint and VLEs, Use of generative AI within further and higher education.
  • Presentation Skills
  • Effective Research
  • Growth Mindset Toolkit
  • Time Management
  • Working in Groups
  • Assignment Support and Feedback
  • Careers Guidance
  • CAO guidelines and Access Supports
  • Dealing with examinations / assessments

Education Progression

Learners who have successfully completed Headstart may be eligible to progress to the DkIT Access Programme – DkAP.   

Fees and Funding

Fully funded by Louth Local Development so there is no fee for learners as long as learners fulfil the SICAP (Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme) requirements. 

Entry requirements

Must fulfil SICAP requirements: 

  • Live in County Louth
  • People living in disadvantaged communities
  • People impacted by educational disadvantage
  • People living in jobless households or households where the primary income source is low-paid and/or precarious

Disclaimer: All module titles are subject to change and for indicative purposes only. All courses are delivered subject to demand and timetables are subject to change. Elective Module options will only run subject to student numbers. The relevant Department will determine the viability of each elective module option proceeding depending on the number of students who choose that option. Students will be offered alternative elective modules on their programme should their preferred elective option not be proceeding. Award Options for Common Entry Programmes: The relevant Department will determine the viability of each award option proceeding depending on the number of students who choose either option. If the numbers for one of the Award options exceed available places, students for this option will be selected based on Academic Merit (highest grades).
