Course Overview
Dundalk Institute of Technology is delighted to launch the ‘Certificate in Access to Higher Education’ to widen access and participation in third-level courses.
The full-time Level 6 programme has been designed to provide an accessible route to third-level education for a diverse cohort of students that face barriers to accessing third-level courses and will run from Nov 25 - May 26, with approximately three days of lectures per week.
The Certificate in Access to Higher Education is fully-funded by the HEA Performance Funding 2024.
The programme is the ideal way to ease in to the college experience, with modules including Applied Study Skills, Information and Communication Technology and The Application of Numbers. On successful completion of the course, participants will have the opportunity to gain entry onto a number of DkIT Degree Programmes.

Course Delivery and Modules
This course will be on-campus and will require students to be on campus two or three days a week. Modules will include:
- Applied Study Skills
- Information and Communication Technology
- Application of Numbers
- Introduction to Higher Education
- The Education Experience
Education Progression
On completion of this course, students will meet the standard requirements for most Level 7 courses in DkIT, as well as some Level 8 courses. •
Applicants for entry to 1st year undergraduate programmes will be required to apply to the CAO and will be assessed in time for Round A.
Applicants will not be required to complete a personal statement unless they wish to be assessed separately under the Mature Access route.
Entry for Level 7 courses: GPA of 40%
Entry to level 8 courses: GPA of 50%
Exceptions will apply for courses with specific entry requirements - applicants must fulfil the specific additional entry criteria with either the leaving certificate or other recognised qualifications.
Some programmes may also require interviews and/or auditions for entry.

Entry requirements
Due to the nature of the expected cohort - there are no standard educational requirements, such as the Leaving Certificate, for entry onto the programme. Ideally, applicants must satisfy THREE of the following socio-economic/educational disadvantage indicators:
•Demonstrate that they will commit to and benefit from the programme
•From a socio-economic group underrepresented in higher education or can demonstrate other forms of socio-economic or educational disadvantage as defined in the National Access Programme (NAP).
•Have completed the Louth Local Development / DkIT Pathways and / or Headstart programme.
•In receipt of a means-tested social welfare payment
•Live in an area of urban or rural disadvantage
•Have attended a DEIS school for a minimum of 2 years.
•Participant on a Youthreach or similar community programme.
•All applicants must be over 18 years (by 1st January in the proposed year of entry).

If the numbers for one of the Award options exceed available places, students for this option will be selected based on Academic Merit (highest grades).
