Course Overview

This programme aims to increase the knowledge, skills and competence of nurses caring for older people enabling them to recognise and respond to the deteriorating health and/or change in functional status of the person in a timely and proactive manner. 

Graduates of this programme will demonstrate knowledge of the contemporary approaches to care of the older person.  This will include assessing, monitoring, and managing individuals with acute and chronic diseases and disorders in a variety of health care settings.

The programme will develop registered nurses ongoing competencies and will encourage an ethos of lifelong learning.

Graduates of this programme will demonstrate knowledge of the contemporary approaches to care of the older person.

Course Delivery and Modules

The programme is delivered with a combination of live online lectures (9.00hrs to 16.30 hrs) and face to face workshops  (09.00hrs to 16.30 hrs) in DkIT 

 

Students are also required to undertake directed and independent study. 

Due to the blended learning delivery within this course, students should have access to PC / Mac, a headset with a mic, and a broadband internet connection from home, so as to be able to fully participate in the course

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

  • Critically examine the physiological changes associated with the ageing process.
  • Critically evaluate the impact of these changes on the health, functional ability and wellbeing of the older person.
  • Critically evaluate and synthesise the signs and symptoms indicating a deterioration in the health and /or functional ability of the older person.
  • Demonstrate competence in performing an holistic physical health assessment of the older person.
  • Critically evaluate and synthesis the findings from clinical assessments to inform decision making and actions taken for appropriate patient outcomes.

Entry requirements

  • Applicants must be a registered Nurse with NMBI or equivalent 
  • Applicants must be currently employed in a health care setting  
  • All applicants will normally hold a relevant Level 8 qualification (or equivalent). Applicants who do not have a Level 8 qualification may apply for entry to the programme in accordance with the procedures outlined in the DkIT Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Policy.
