Course Overview
This 12-week part-time programme aims to support nurses/midwives/Health and Social Care Professionals (HSCPs) in the development of knowledge, skills and competence in the core principles of palliative care. This aim is in line with the National Clinical Programme for Palliative Care HSE (2014) objective to build palliative care capacity and capability among all nurses/midwives/Health and Social Care Professionals (HSCPs) to respond confidently and in a timely manner to the palliative care needs of individuals, families and carers. The programme offers opportunities to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and partnership, for an integrated approach to palliative care. The content within this programme supports the Department of Health’s (2024) policy where high-quality palliative care may be accessed by all those in need.

Course Delivery and Modules
The programme is delivered over one semester, predominately via live online lectures on Tuesdays, in addition, students are required to attend the DkIT campus for face-to-face classes (09.00hrs to 16.30 hrs approx.) for 3 Tuesdays over the semester.

Students on the programme will also be expected to undertake some independent learning.

- Professional, Ethical and Legal Practice

Entry requirements
- Nurses/Midwives registered with NMBI or equivalent.
- Health & Social Care Professionals (HSCPs) registered with a recognised professional body.
- Applicants should have a minimum of one-year post registration experience.
- Work in a practice setting where there are individuals with life-limiting illness, for the duration of the programme.
- Applicants will normally hold a level 8 qualification. Applicants who do not have a level 8 qualification may apply for entry to the programme in accordance with the procedures outlined in the DkIT Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy.
- Applicants may be interviewed.
- Due to the blended learning delivery within this course students should have access to a PC / Mac, a headset with a mic, and a broadband internet connection from home, so as to be able to fully participate in the course.
- Basic IT skills essential
