Course Overview

This is a Level 6 course designed for Electrical Instrumentation craftspersons who want to develop the technical and regulatory skills required to work across general electrical systems.

You will learn skills such as installation, commissioning, testing and maintenance of specialised electrical systems, including microgeneration, commercial electrical systems, fire and intruder alarms, instrument and power transformers.

Particular emphasis is given on inspection, testing and statutory certification, including the responsibilities associated with the Qualified Certifier role and compliance with I.S. 10101 and I.S. 3218.

What makes this course different

Understanding the Industry

Electrical Instrumentation craftspersons work with sophisticated industrial systems, including instrumentation, control systems, sensors and programmable technologies. This course provides an opportunity to build on that existing expertise by developing additional skills in general electrical systems and applications.

The programme focuses on the installation, commissioning, testing and maintenance of specialised electrical systems across commercial and industrial contexts. This includes renewable energy and microgeneration systems, specialised lighting and power circuits, fire and intruder alarm systems, instrument and power transformers, and heating control systems.

A strong emphasis is placed on electrical safety, inspection, testing and statutory certification. You will develop practical knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, including I.S. 10101 and I.S. 3218, and develop the skills required to identify non-compliances and complete statutory certification documentation. The programme also explores the responsibilities associated with acting as a Qualified Certifier for electrical works.

Entry requirements

To apply for this course, you must hold a valid National Craft Certificate in Electrical Instrumentation (FETAC Level 6).

This course is designed for qualified Electrical Instrumentation craftspersons who want to broaden their electrical skills and develop their knowledge of electrical installation, testing and certification.
