Understanding the Industry
The bioscience sector spans multiple industries, including life sciences, therapeutics, healthcare, pharmaceuticals and food science. Bioscience explores all living things—how they function and interact with their environment. Bioscientists study diverse topics such as the nature of organisms, their behaviour, evolutionary history, and potential uses.
The Bioscience Sector in Ireland: Ireland is a global leader in the life sciences and bioscience industries, hosting 19 of the world’s top 20 pharmaceutical companies and 18 of the top 25 medtech firms. The sector employs over 100,000 people and contributes more than €116 billion in annual exports, making Ireland the third-largest exporter of pharmaceuticals worldwide. With cutting-edge biopharma facilities, advanced research hubs like NIBRT, and strong government support for innovation, the industry offers exceptional career opportunities in areas such as drug development, biotechnology, and environmental science. This thriving ecosystem ensures graduates are entering one of Ireland’s most dynamic and future-focused sectors.
