Dr Patricia McAleer
Biography
Dr. Patricia McAleer is Manager of the NetwellCASALA research centre. She joined NetwellCASALA in 2018 as a Research Assistant working on the ProACT project which aimed to develop and evaluate digital solutions to support older adults living with multimorbidity (multiple chronic conditions), with a focus on diabetes, chronic heart disease/failure, COPD, and mild cognitive impairment. Subsequently, she completed a PhD which examined the role that a telephone triage nurse service plays in supporting multimorbid older adults to self-manage their health at home.
Prior to working in NetwellCASALA, Patricia undertook a masters degree in ageing and health which explored the experiences of student nurses working with older adults on their clinical placements. Concurrently, she worked as a student intern in the School of Health and Science where her role was to develop entrepreneurial skills in the student body. Arising from her master's research, she developed a validated stress scale - The Student Nurse Stressor-15 (SNS-15) Scale - which assesses the stressors that student nurses experience while working with older adults. A paper describing the development of the SNS-15 was published in the Journal of Clinical Nursing in 2019. To date, the SNS-15 has been validated for use in China and Brazil, and has also been translated into Arabic and Turkish. It is widely used in nursing research around the world in countries such as America, Australia, Brazil, Oman, the Philippines and Sri Lanka.
