Course Overview
The aim of the programme are to provide learners with opportunities to develop their knowledge and skills in the recognition and management of the deteriorating adult/patients
On completion of the course the graduates will be able to:
- Critically evaluate the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to recognise and manage deteriorating adults within the health care setting.
- Demonstrate competence and critical thinking ability, which enhances assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of nursing care through discursive knowledge, reflection and evidence-based practice.
- Demonstrate evidence-based clinical practice skills and decision-making processes, essential for safe nursing practice. Perform a nursing assessment; plan and initiate care and treatment modalities within agreed interdisciplinary protocols to achieve patient/client-centred outcomes and evaluate their effectiveness.
- Utilise and demonstrate advanced knowledge and critical thinking in the performance of a comprehensive assessment of an acutely ill adult
- Adopt a holistic approach to nursing care and integrate evidence-based knowledge in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the deteriorating adult.
- Effectively manage the nursing care of the deteriorating adult. Determine priorities for care based on need, acuity and optimal time for intervention.
- Self-evaluate and take responsibility for continuing academic / professional development
What makes this course different
This course was designed in conjunction with the Health Service Executive
Blended course delivery (online & in-class) to allow greater flexibility to learners as they manage full-time employment and part-time study.
Course Delivery and Modules
This programme is delivered on Wednesdays, typically students attend DkIT for face to face workshops from 09.00 hrs to 16.30 for 3-4 days over the semester and live on-line classes (09.00hrs to 16.30 hrs) for 4-5 days over the semester.

In addition, students will undertake directed and independent study.
- Anatomical and physiological organ systems: Discuss the structure and function of the various anatomical and physiological organ systems: Cardiovascular, Respiratory, Neurological, Digestive, Renal, Musculoskeletal
- Integrate and synthesize knowledge of altered homeostasis: Homeostasis and altered homeostasis of the Cardiovascular system, chest pain, ECG monitoring, and analysis. Sepsis; Homeostasis and altered homeostasis of the Respiratory system. Respiratory failure; Non-invasive ventilation. Homeostasis and altered homeostasis of the Neurological system; seizures, FAST +; delirium. Homeostasis and altered homeostasis of Abdominal system; acute abdomen, major blood loss, renal. Homeostasis and altered homeostasis of Digestive and Renal systems; Renal insufficiency; Fluid Management Blood chemistry analysis
- Develop skills in order to make accurate clinical judgements: Comprehensive Health History, Cardiovascular assessment, Respiratory assessment, Neurological assessment, Abdominal Assessment
- Strategies for enhancing interdisciplinary collaboration: Holistic assessment and clinical judgement INEWS v2, ISBAR, Interdisciplinary collaboration

Entry requirements
You MUST be:
- Be a registered Nurse with NMBI or equivalent
- Be currently employed in a health care setting
- All applicants will normally hold a relevant Level 8 qualification (or equivalent). Applicants who do not have a Level 8 qualification may apply for entry to the programme in accordance with the procedures outlined in the DkIT Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Policy.
