DkIT Student’s Winning App Tackles Unwanted Graffiti
22 May 2023A Data Analytics students, Ajay Verma, recently won a brand-new competition launched by Louth County Council. The concept behind this new competition is to support keeping Louth Graffiti-Free.
The brief given by Louth County Council was aimed at emerging web design & app developers and the purpose was to give students the opportunity to design and build a new mobile app and web page based on assigned specifications under a tight deadline.
This competition was open to all DkIT students with any level of expertise, but they needed to be able to design and build a functioning app and web page that could be put into use by Louth County Council and can be accessed easily by citizens. This App needed to be a vehicle through which residents can simply submit locations of graffiti within the environs of Louth, with the option of uploading a photo and co-ordinates of the offending graffiti.
The winning DkIT student Ajay Verma has a strong background in computer science, he obtained his Bachelor’s degree in computer science from Mumbai University, India. Ajay then worked for 3 years as an application analyst before deciding to pursue a Master of Science in Data Analytics at DkIT.
Ajay's award-winning project, a mobile app prototype is an innovative solution to a persistent urban problem. The app allows local residents to take a photo of any graffiti they spot in their community and then the app automatically sends it to the council along with the geo-coordinates of the location. This approach leverages the power of technology to empower citizens and enhance community involvement in local governance. By using the app, residents can report graffiti quickly and easily, which can then be removed by the council more efficiently.
Prof. Fergal Mc Caffery, Head of School of Informatics & Creative Arts said;
“We are delighted to Congratulate Ajay and it is fantastic that both the judges and Louth County Council were really pleased with the app and presentation that Ajay produced for this competition. It is superb to see our students receive external recognition for their efforts and it is a great reflection on both the quality of the students work but also the excellence of the academic programmes and lecturers here in DkIT”.
