DkIT Sport Scholar Shortlisted for 2019 GAA Young Footballer of the Year

02 October 2019

DkIT Sport Scholar and Business Studies student, Rian O’Neill [20] has been selected as a contender for Young Footballer of the Year at the 2019 GAA-GPA PWC All-Star awards. The Armagh native is nominated among two well-known Kerry players, Seán O'Shea and David Clifford.

Rian debuted with his county senior team this year and is the rising star of the Crossmaglen Rangers club. He is a centre forward for the DkIT GAA team and played a starring role in the teams run to the Trench Cup final which ended in defeat to Letterkenny IT.

Speaking today, Derek Crilly, Sports & Societies Officer at DkIT said,

“I am delighted to congratulate Rian on his worthy nomination. The news comes after his impressive performance at county level this summer. He had particularly impressive performances in the defeats of Down and Monaghan in the championship. Rian is dedicated to his sport and his studies and through his Sports Scholarship at DkIT, we continue to provide support to allow him to manage both. I wish him the best of luck at the awards in November but whatever the outcome, I am positive that Rian has a bright future ahead, both on and off the pitch.”

Rian’s family are no strangers to sporting success. His father Gareth, is a former Louth defender, while the forward's uncle is multi-All-Ireland winner Oisín McConville, who also manages DkIT's Senior team.

This year’s All-Star awards take place on Friday 2 November in Dublin’s Convention Centre and will be screened live by RTÉ TV.

The DkIT Sports Scholarship Applications are currently open and welcomes applications from a wide range of sports. For more information, please visit dkit.ie/sportscholarships.
