Dundalk Institute of Technology have announced a new MSc in Computing in Medical Device Software Engineering which is starting in September 2022 and will be delivered 100% online. This innovative course is closely aligned with the cutting-edge and revolutionary medical device software research currently performed in the Regulated Software Research Centre (RSRC) which resides in DkIT.
Demand for graduates in this industry is at an all-time high with 9 of the world’s top 10 medical technology companies based in Ireland. The medical technology sector in Ireland is recognised as one of the five global emerging hubs which currently employs over 40,000 people. Graduates with these scarce skills will be in high demand within the medical device software industry.

“The programme is built upon our research in the RSRC that has shaped international medical device software engineering through leading the development of 5 International standards and enables participants to also embark upon innovative medical device software research projects as a core part of the course.”
This course is offered either part-time or full time and graduates of this course will be regarded as subject area specialists in the field of Medical Device Software. Completion of this programme is highly suitable for anyone working in, or aspiring to work in, developing medical device software.
Graduates of the programme will have detailed knowledge and understanding of both the creative, developmental, and programming strands needed for immersive production and will be skilled in the use of applications used to produce immersive experiences for multiple industry domains. With a focus on the healthcare software industry, you will gain the skills required to become a Medical Device Software Engineer along with specialised knowledge in Regulatory Quality Assurance, the ability to be Product Owner/ Product Manager on a Medical service software product, the specialisation to explore Medical Device Software Research or the capability to become a Medical Device Software Cybersecurity Engineer.
The aim of this programme is to produce graduates with an advanced level of theoretical knowledge and practice, with highly developed research capability, innovation and management skills to enable their professional development in both the IT industry but in particular within the booming healthcare software sector.
Applicants to this course must be able to demonstrate experience in the field of software engineering and/or software development and hold a minimum Second-Class Honours (2.2) in Computing from a recognised third level institution, or equivalent qualification in a cognate discipline, or a minimum Second-Class Honours (2.2) Higher Diploma in Science in Computing (or equivalent) NFQ Level 8 award.
Full-time delivery is a total duration of 12 Months (3 Semesters): In semester 1 (September – December) students will complete the taught modules of the course and in Semesters 2 and 3 (January – September) students will complete their research projects.
