Quality in Action: DKIT Students Lift Their Learning with Hiab

Mechanical Engineering students from Year 1 right up to Year 4 at Dundalk Institute of Technology recently took part in an industry‑led Quality Masterclass delivered by Giorgio Spoto, Quality Manager at Hiab Dundalk. Special thanks also go to Ernest Roklicer for his support in making the session possible.

The event formed part of DKIT’s commitment to connecting engineering education with real‑world practice. Instead of a traditional site tour, students engaged in a focused Q&A masterclass where Giorgio shared practical insights from his career in quality management and modern manufacturing.

Throughout the discussion, students explored topics such as problem‑solving on the production line, the role of data in decision‑making, managing variation, and the skills required to excel in quality‑focused roles. Giorgio’s open, engaging style encouraged students to ask thoughtful questions, helping them understand how concepts from their Quality & Reliability modules translate directly into industry practice.

The masterclass also highlighted the growing importance of quality careers within advanced manufacturing, giving students a clearer picture of the opportunities available after graduation. Many students commented on how valuable it was to hear directly from an experienced practitioner working at the forefront of manufacturing quality.

DKIT extends sincere thanks to Giorgio Spoto, Ernest Roklicer, and the wider Hiab Dundalk team for their continued support of engineering education. Events like this play a vital role in preparing students for impactful careers in the manufacturing and quality sectors.
