Healthy Campus team unveil ‘Walking Through the Light’ installation
Dr Edel Healy, Chair of the DkIT Healthy Campus Working Group, unveiled the ‘Walking Through the Light’ installation as part of the Healthy Campus initiatives at DkIT. The overall aim of the project was to create an inclusive celebration of mental health, draw awareness to services, and connect people. It was an initiative between Dr Seán O’ Connell, Student Counselling, Naoise Weldon, Pastoral Care and Dr Adèle Commins, Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music, who are all members of the DkIT Healthy Campus Working Group.
During the project students and staff attended workshops with artist and facilitator Jenny Slater. The workshops provided an opportunity for participants to develop creative ideas for a design to embrace a sense of belonging, community, nurturing, wellbeing and support. Participants experimented with ideas utilising light including dream catchers. The designs culminated in an installation created by students and staff, exemplifying a whole campus approach. The Tree of life with strong foundations became the central focus of the installation symbolising growth, connection, strength and longevity. Other elements of the installation were inspired by nature, changing seasons, local folklore and Celtic traditions, and its central position in DkIT creates a sense of welcoming and warmth in the building, while visibility of the artwork will serve as a reminder of our commitment to positive wellbeing for all on campus.
DkIT Healthy Campus are grateful to Healthy Louth, Louth County Council, for their support of the project and we were delighted to be joined by Rachel Finegan from Louth County Council for the unveiling.
