DkIT summer camp empowers girls to explore technology, engineering and computing
Dundalk Institute of Technology recently hosted the TEC (Technology, Engineering, Computing) Summer Camp.
Twenty-eight girls aged between 12 and 14, had the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of TEC activities across the week.
The programme was carefully designed to provide a number of engaging experiences, from technology workshops and engineering challenges to design activities, industry visits and discussions with female role models. The DkIT Camp was designed by Orlaigh Smyth, lecturer in the Department of the Built Environment.
Orlaigh said: “As Coordinator of the TEC Camp, I had the pleasure of overseeing an inspiring and rewarding week that brought together young girls to explore, create, learn and grow. Watching the girls step outside their comfort zones, develop new skills and build lasting friendships was one of the highlights of the week.”
The camp was a great success and a testament to the girls’ enthusiasm, curiosity, and determination. Throughout the week, they tackled every activity with energy and confidence—bridge‑building, microbiology and DNA, engineering challenges, and learning about renewable energy during the wind‑turbine visit.
Positive feedback from participants and families highlighted the programme’s impact in building confidence, teamwork, and aspiration. It was a privilege to coordinate such a memorable week and to witness the girls’ growth, achievements, and excitement as they discovered new interests and possibilities.
