DkIT Lecturer Presents at International Fashion and Technology Conference

DkIT lecturer Jacqueline Toal recently presented on her research project exploring storytelling through augmented reality textiles, AI and digital fashion, projection mapping along with some experiments in 3D scanning and virtual reality at the Fashion-Textiles-Wearables Conference in Manchester. Her presentation entitled ‘Immersive Storytelling through AR Textiles, AI and Digital Fashion’ critically reflected on her exhibition "Patterning Futures: Dynamic Textiles," in the R-Space Gallery in Lisburn.

Jacqueline’s work is Inspired by local Irish heritage — from at‑risk textile mills to watchtowers where linen bleaching was once observed. She reflects that:

‘These places hold deep cultural memory within my own home surroundings. I live in such a rich cultural heritage area, which I love (maybe I’m a little biased).’

Her art and research explored how tangible and intangible cultural histories can be reimagined through immersive technologies, particularly women’s stories and the role of the female within the Irish linen industry, and inspirations drawn from Irish textile motifs, patterns and lace.

Jacqueline, a member of the Creative Arts Research Centre at DkIT, presented her work alongside researchers who are clearly pushing the boundaries of textile, fashion and digital technologies. She commented:

‘There were so many inspiring presentations — from sensory and emotional perception in pleated garments, to Ghanaian garment‑care practices, biodegradable textiles and sustainable neuro‑fashion. It was a privilege to present alongside such innovative talks and to network with so many interesting people. I came away energised with lots of new ideas.’
