DkIT lecturer celebrates success of Mná na hÉireann at Dublin’s Ambassador Theatre

CARC member Carol Leavy Joyce, a lecturer on the BA (Hons) Musical Theatre at DkIT is celebrating the success of Mná na hÉireann at The Ambassador Theatre in Dublin this October. The production is a celebration of Irish women, their stories and their enduring contribution to Ireland’s cultural heritage through Irish dance and music. Carol’s academic expertise, meticulous research and determination have helped bring this ambitious production to life again, seven years after it debuted in An Táin Arts Centre, Dundalk.

Mná na hÉireann celebrates the lives, experiences and achievements of Irish women, drawing on the richness of Ireland’s history and cultural identity. Its presentation at the iconic Ambassador Theatre provided an opportunity to share these stories with audiences in a compelling theatrical setting, highlighting the importance of recognising women’s voices and preserving their place in the national narrative.

For Carol, the realisation of the production represents the culmination of sustained intellectual commitment, creative collaboration and detailed research. Drawing on her academic background and experience in dance studies, she has brought a scholarly perspective to the project that is realised through creative arts practice.

The journey from initial concept to stage required considerable dedication. Researching the historical and cultural contexts underpinning the production, exploring the experiences of Irish women and translating this knowledge into a meaningful theatrical experience demanded both perseverance and a clear sense of purpose. Through this process, Carol has demonstrated how academic research can extend beyond traditional scholarly settings to enrich public engagement with history, heritage and the arts.

Her involvement also reflects the value of interdisciplinary collaboration, which is at the heart of CARC, bringing together research, performance and cultural interpretation to create a production that resonates with contemporary audiences while remaining connected to Ireland’s past.

The success of Mná na hÉireann at The Ambassador Theatre is a testament to the commitment of everyone involved in bringing the show to the stage. It also highlights the contribution of researchers whose work bridges higher education, cultural research and creative practice.
