DkIT hosts first ever Green Week

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) recently hosted its first ever Green Week to highlight green initiatives on campus and what staff and students can do to play their part in looking after the environment.

The week featured a wide range of sustainability-focused activities across campus.

A Bike Repair Workshop, delivered by a technician from professional bicycle services provider Cyclopath, offered minor repairs and free safety checks. Cyclists also received practical advice on replacement parts and more extensive maintenance work.

Experts from Panda Waste Services were on hand to explain what happens to waste once it leaves campus and there were opportunities to find out how bottle and can donations support both the Student Hardship Fund and Dundalk Dog Rescue through the Deposit Return Scheme. Throughout the week, bedding, towels and dog toys were collected in aid of Dundalk Dog Rescue.

A Micro Plastics Talk & Quiz gave staff and students the opportunity to learn more about the impact of microplastics while testing their knowledge for a chance to win prizes.

The Clothes Swap Shop encouraged sustainable fashion choices by allowing staff and students to donate and pick up pre-loved clothing, shoes and accessories. The initiative offered a simple way to refresh a wardrobe while promoting a more sustainable campus community.

Daily walking trails provided a welcome break from work and study. Participants had the opportunity to explore DkIT’s iconic wind turbine and followed the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Trail.

To round off the week, staff participated in a Climate Fresk Workshop, Climate Fresk is an innovative, collaborative workshop that raises awareness and deepens understanding of climate change through a hands-on, game-based experience. Participants work together to build a large visual “fresk” that maps the causes, consequences, and interconnections of climate change, turning complex climate science into an engaging and accessible learning journey.

Christian Maas, Climate Action and Sustainability Manager at DkIT said:

“It was great to see people coming together to participate in events that focus on sustainability and to see that both staff and students can play an active part in the development of a greener campus.”
