Business graduate Lauren accelerates career with DkIT degree

Hailing from Newry, Lauren Travers always knew she wanted a career that would allow her to enter the working world quickly while staying close to home. A former student of St Mary's High School, Lauren studied A-Levels in Sport Science, Business, and Health and Social Care. It was through the guidance of her school careers teacher that she first learned about the opportunities available at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT).

Encouraged by the accessibility of the CAO application process and reassured that the student loan system was the same as it would have been had she chosen to study in Belfast, Lauren felt confident in her decision.

“The location was a major factor for me — just 15 minutes from home, DkIT offered the perfect balance of independence and convenience. The cost of living and social life was more affordable compared to Belfast, making it an attractive option. My mum, Caroline, was definitely a massive driver in getting me to DkIT and supporting me to reach my goals – I couldn’t have done it without her!” Lauren says.

Lauren chose to pursue a degree in Business, drawn to its three-year structure which allowed her to fast-track her path into employment. While she initially expected university life to feel intimidating, her experience quickly proved otherwise. She found the learning environment supportive and personal, noting that lecturers took the time to get to know their students. This welcoming atmosphere meant she could receive tailored guidance and one-on-one support in areas where she needed it most.

She also credits the DkIT Students’ Union as an invaluable — and often untapped — resource for students. Throughout her studies, the Union provided support and guidance, helping students navigate both academic and personal challenges.

Today, Lauren is putting her qualification into practice as a Marketing Executive with Pure Engineering in Newry. In her role, she manages social media, marketing campaigns, event management, and photography — a dynamic position that reflects both her creativity and the practical skills she developed during her time at DkIT.

For Lauren, choosing DkIT was not just about earning a degree; it was about finding the right fit — academically, financially, and personally — and setting herself on a confident path into her professional career.
