Nursing lecturers present at “Shaping the Future: Innovation in Palliative Care Education and Practice” conference
On 22 October in Dublin, 61 delegates across the island of Ireland convened for the Education Network Event titled “Shaping the Future: Innovation in Palliative Care Education and Practice”. The event brought together educators, clinicians, researchers, policy makers and service leaders united by a shared commitment to advancing palliative care education across the island of Ireland and beyond.
Among the highlights was an oral presentation by Ann Everitt-Reynolds and Elizabeth Murphy nursing lecturers from the Department of Nursing, Midwifery and Early Years at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT). Their presentation, “Assessing What Matters: Teaching Palliative Care Needs Assessment Through Simulation,” showcased a collaborative initiative between DkIT and the Regional Specialist Palliative Care Services (RSPCS) across Louth, Meath, Cavan, and Monaghan.
This innovative approach integrates simulation-based learning into the Certificate in Contemporary Palliative Care Practice programme, offering students a dynamic and practical method for developing essential skills to undertake a palliative care needs assessment. The partnership between academic and clinical teams reflects a growing emphasis on experiential learning and interprofessional collaboration in palliative care education.
The event was hailed as a resounding success, fostering dialogue, sharing best practices, and inspiring future developments in palliative care across the island.
