New book explores Civil War histories, memories and legacies in Kerry
On Friday 21 November, Minister Norma Foley officially launched, The Civil War in Kerry and Beyond: Histories, Memories and Legacies at the Kerry County Museum in Tralee. This edited collection of essays is based on research first presented at the hugely successful 'Civil War in Kerry' commemorative conference in 2023.
The book sets the tumultuous and traumatic events of the conflict in their local and national contexts and provides new understandings about why the divisions elicited by the struggle were so traumatic and long-lasting in Irish society.
It features a fascinating chapter by Dr Richard McElligott, lecturer in modern and Irish history in the Department of Humanities. McElligott's contribution explores the harrowing impact and enduring legacy of the conflict in his native parish of Kilflynn in North Kerry. This work represents the first published output of Dr McElligott’s Royal Irish Academy funded ‘Echoes of the Civil War’ project.
