Mechanical Engineering students celebrate third annual Christmas Mario Kart Tournament

Level 7 and 8 Mechanical Engineering students at Dundalk Institute of Technology gathered last week for the third annual Christmas Mario Kart Tournament, a festive tradition that continues to grow in popularity and impact.

The event, held in the North (Pole) Block of DkIT, was designed to foster student engagement and community spirit at the end of the semester. A lively atmosphere was created not only by the races themselves but also by a DJ providing festive tunes, ensuring energy and excitement throughout the day.

This year’s format featured 28 drivers competing in a seven‑round continuous league, with each driver racing five times. The competition built steadily across the rounds, culminating in a dramatic finale where the championship was decided on the final lap of the final race.

The overall champion for 2025 was Sean Manyara, a Year 4 Level 8 student, who secured victory in thrilling style with an unbeaten record of five wins from five races.

The Mario Kart tournament has become a cornerstone of Mechanical Engineering’s student‑led activities, balancing academic rigour with opportunities for social connection. By embedding fairness and inclusivity into its design, the event ensures that all participants can take part meaningfully, reinforcing DkIT’s commitment to student success and engagement.

The tournament will return in December 2026, promising even more festive fun, fierce racing, and holiday music.
