Year 3 Event and Hospitality Management students at Dundalk Institute of Technology, guided by their tutor Maria Roddy-Freyne, have continued the valued tradition of supporting the Irish Cancer Society’s annual Breast Cancer Campaign, raising an impressive €925 through their course fundraising event.
The students hosted a Big Pink Coffee Morning which included fun activities, an engaging raffle, and an awareness campaign promoting breast checks. Maria, a breast cancer survivor herself, has led these initiatives with her students since 2014, following her own treatment.
Since the yearly event first began, the ongoing dedication and generosity shown by the students, the DkIT Community and local businesses who continue to support this important cause has been fantastic. Thanks to their collective efforts, over €17,000 has been raised for the Irish Cancer Society over the past 12 years.
Speaking about the event, Maria Roddy Freyne said:
“Our students really enjoyed the event, which not only raised vital funds for breast cancer awareness but also strengthened teamwork and allowed them to apply what they’ve learned on their course. Breast cancer is a cause close to many of our hearts, with nearly 3,600 women and about 30 men diagnosed in Ireland each year, early detection and awareness are crucial. Every euro raised supports research and provides support services for those affected nationwide. I am really proud of what they achieved at this event both in fundraising and awareness.”
Student Jessica Commins added:
“We had such an amazing time at our fundraising event for Irish Breast Cancer today! It was so nice to see everything come together after all the planning, the setup looked great, and everyone really got into the spirit of the day. It was fantastic to see so many students and lecturers come along to show their support, enjoy the morning, and help raise money for such an important cause. Hearing how much we raised at the end of the event was the perfect way to wrap up the day. Huge thanks to everyone who got involved, donated, or simply came along to support, we couldn’t have done it without you.”
Sam Shearman echoed:
"Big shoutout to everyone who came out to the pop-up coffee shop for breast cancer awareness! We are so grateful to all the staff and students for showing up and donating. Their support really means a lot and helps make a difference for such a compelling cause. It was great to see everyone come together to help out and have fun while doing it!"
