DkIT Animation Students’ film Rising Tides screened at two Irish Film Festivals
Three students from the Certificate in Digital Animation at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) Shane Brennan, Karen Bertinelli, and Jessiel Rael Cabasan, recently had their 2D cut-out inspired animation Rising Tides selected for screening at both the Meath Film Festival and the Clew Bay Film Festival in Achill Island.

The fourth Clew Bay Film Festival took place from the 6th-7th September and included workshops, premiere screenings and in-depth film discussions. The Meath Film Festival took place on the 13th & 14th of September at the Solstice Arts Centre in Navan and featured a variety of events such as a costume design workshop, feature films, 60 second films and a series of short films, of which Rising Tides was part.
Rising Tides is a poignant short film that explores climate change and migration through the journey of its protagonist, Rahi. The team focused on crafting a compelling narrative designed to resonate with audiences, combining visual storytelling with social commentary.
Director of Rising Tides Shane Brennan said:
“We were honoured to have our short animation Rising Tides selected for both the Meath Film Festival and the Clew Bay Film Festival this year, alongside so many incredible films. Sharing our student project with a live audience and seeing it on the big screen was a fantastic experience. We’re deeply grateful for the opportunity and inspired to keep growing as storytellers in animation.”
Lecturer Jackie Toal, who teaches the 2D animation module, praised the students’ achievement:
“It’s a great accomplishment to see such creativity and thoughtful storytelling in their cut-out animation. I’m delighted to see Shane, Karen, and Jessiel receive recognition for all their hard work.”
