DkIT Launches ‘Science X Factor’ video project
As part of the stage 4 Upstream Processing module on the B.Sc (Hons) in Biopharmaceutical Science, students work in small groups for one week to design and record a short video on a scientific topic. The goal is to produce reusable learning objects that can be used to advance understanding of scientific topics with second and third year students.
The project concept was devised by Dr. Ronan Bree, Lecturer in the Department of Applied Sciences, who commented that
“Witnessing the intensity of student engagement with this project, where they combine their scientific understanding with both communication and technology has been very motivating for me. It is a form of assessment the 4th year group enjoy while the enormous learning power of these videos is observed with the second and third year students. This peer to peer learning technique has been a real success on many levels. It is impressive what the students can put together and produce in just one week”

Currently, in its 6th year, the ‘Science X Factor’ video project has seen the development of a library of useful videos. Each year, the class select their winning video and one of these has been viewed over 26,500 times on YouTube. This video was created by Caoimhin Griffin, Sinead Bellew and Shi Hui Ng and can be viewed by clicking here.
Recently the 2016-17 winning video as judged by the class was recorded by Tan Ser Hwee (Shincheal), Pei Sian Hoo and Shirley Xin Wen Leong. In close second was a video recorded by Ruth Matthews, Leanna Morgan and Marnelle Mendoza. You can see these and all previous winning and runner-up videos by clicking here.
