Join the H₂O Heroes team at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) for a special evening of science, exploration, creativity and conversation as part of Science Week 2026. From the frozen landscapes of Antarctica to the rivers, lakes and coastlines of Ireland, discover the extraordinary story of water and the vital role it plays in connecting our communities, our environment and our planet. This free, interactive evening brings together inspiring speakers, scientists, artists and local communities to explore our relationship with water and how we can all play a part in protecting it.

This evening is particularly suited to adults, community groups, environmental organisations, Tidy Towns groups, local interest groups and members of the public.

Meet our special guest speakers

Dr. Niamh Shaw

The Shape of Water in Extreme Worlds Join Irish explorer and science communicator Dr. Niamh Shaw as she shares stories and experiences from her Antarctic and Arctic expeditions. Discover the challenges, wonder and inspiration of exploring one of the most extraordinary environments on Earth, and reflect on what these remote landscapes can teach us about our changing planet and our connection to water. Learn more about Dr.Niamh Shaw at niamhshaw.ie.

Dr. Suzanne Linnane

Our Connection to Water in Ireland Water is part of every aspect of our lives, but how often do we stop to think about where it comes from, where it goes, and how our actions affect it? Join Dr. Suzanne Linnane, Director of the Centre for Freshwater and Environmental Studies at DkIT and co-founder of H₂O Heroes, as she explores our relationship with water in Ireland. Discover why our rivers, lakes and catchments matter, how communities are connected through water, and why protecting our freshwater environments is a shared responsibility.

Meet the Scientists

Ever wondered what scientists actually do, how they study our rivers, or what lives beneath the surface of our freshwater environments? Come along, meet the H₂O Heroes scientists and researchers, ask questions, explore interactive exhibits and discover the fascinating science of water.

Become Part of the Art: Add Your Drop

Science meets creativity in a special collaborative art installation developed with visual artist Michelle Boyle. Building on artwork created by children during H₂O Heroes summer camps, this immersive installation celebrates the connections between water, people, landscapes and communities. Visitors are invited to ‘Add Your Drop’ by contributing a personal message or environmental pledge to the growing artwork. Together, we will create a powerful visual reminder that small individual actions can make a big collective difference.
