Course Overview
To enable participants to reflect on the therapeutic use of Cognitive Behavioural skills and develop an ability to utilise such skills in their professional practice. In so doing they will be guided by an understanding of ethical practice and scope of practice. It is envisaged that this will contribute to building confident recovery-orientated professionals.
The Certificate in Introduction to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is suitable for:
- Qualified professionals working in health and social care (e.g., Nursing, Allied Health Professionals, Social Work) who would benefit from incorporating the evidence-based strategies of CBT into their practice.
- Qualified professionals working in health and social care (e.g., Nursing, Allied Health Professionals, Social Work) that engage with individuals who may experience mental health issues.
- Qualified counsellors and psychotherapists who want to develop specific skills in cognitive behavioural therapy to support their therapeutic practice.
- Practitioners in a community setting who wish to be upskilled with a refocused practice in line with Sharing the Vision: A Mental Health Policy for Everyone.
Course Delivery and Modules
The programme is delivered on one day a week (typically Friday morning) over one semester with a combination of in-class and on-line delivery.

Students will also undertake independent and directed study.
Due to the blended learning delivery within this course students should have access to a PC / Mac, a headset with a mic, and a broadband internet connection from home, so as to be able to fully participate in the course. Basic IT skills essential.

Course Content
- Theoretical underpinnings of cognitive behavioural therapy
- Core therapeutic principles associated with psychological well-being core to CBT approaches.
- Models for understanding common mental health difficulties.
- Evidence-based cognitive behavioural interventions, skills, and protocols to promote well-being.
- Professional boundaries, scope of practice, and the learner’s responsibility and accountability in the context of applying introductory principles of CBT within their professional practice.

Entry Requirements
- Nurses/midwives, medical doctors, and health and social care professionals (HSCPs) who have a primary degree (or equivalent) and are registered with a recognised professional body appropriate to their field.
- Trained psychotherapists and counsellors who have a primary degree.
- Currently employed in a professional practice setting in which the utilisation of the course material can contribute to quality care.
- Currently employed in a professional role with a scope of practice which is congruent with the utilisation of the course material within a practice context.
- Applicants who do not have a Level 8 qualification may apply for entry to the programme in accordance with the procedures outlined in the DkIT Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy. Learn more about RPL at DkIT
