Course Overview
The aim of the Certificate in Trauma Informed Care is to provide the learner with an opportunity to develop the knowledge and understanding of trauma required to competently integrate the theory and principles of trauma informed care into their practice. This course aims to:
- Critically discuss neurobiological, somatic, and attachment theories underpinning contemporary understanding of trauma and the adverse biopsychosocial effects of trauma exposure
- Critically discuss the theoretical underpinnings and structural components of trauma informed care within the context of person-centred and recovery oriented mental health care
- Critically reflect on professional boundaries, scope of practice, and the learner’s responsibility and accountability in the context of applying trauma informed care within their professional practice
This course is best suited to:
- Practitioners engaged in a professional relationship with persons and communities who may have experienced trauma
- Service providers engaged in providing services to persons and communities who may have experienced trauma.

This programme is approved by the NMBI (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland).
This programme is suitable for nurses from various disciplines including those working in the Intellectual Disability and General settings
Course Delivery and Modules
This programme will be delivered via live on-line lectures one day a week (09.00hrs to 12.00hrs). Students will also be requred to attend DkIT for some face to face workshops (09.00hrs to 16.00hrs).

Entry requirements
Participants must:
- Nurses/midwives, medical doctors and health and social care professionals (HSCPs) and registered with a recognised professional body appropriate to their field
- Currently employed in a professional practice setting in which the utilisation of the course material can contribute to quality care.
- Currently employed in a professional role with a scope of practice which is congruent with the utilisation of the course material within a practice context.
- All applicants will hold a relevant Level 8 qualification.
- Applicants who do not have a level 8 qualification may apply for entry to the programme in accordance with the procedures outlined in the DkIT Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy. (view policy) Learn more about RPL at DkIT
