MSc in Renewable Energy Systems
Course Summary
The M.Sc. in Renewable Energy Systems is designed to produce graduates with a good theoretical and practical understanding of renewable energy technologies. The programme critically investigates the energy output from wind, solar, ocean and biomass technologies from a technical and economic viewpoint.
The primary aim of the M.Sc. in Renewable Energy Systems is to produce effective engineers and technical workers for a professional career in energy and, in particular, renewable energy.
The programme spans a minimum of three semesters, i.e. beginning in September of the first year and ending in following September (one calendar year).
The programme consists of a taught syllabus, that includes assignments, and an individual research thesis. Lectures are generally convened on Mondays and Fridays.

- Wind Energy 1 (mandatory)
- Solar Energy 1 (mandatory)
- Water Power 1 (mandatory)
- Bio-Energy 1 (mandatory)
Semester 2
- Energy Policy and Economics (mandatory)
- Grid Integration of Renewables (mandatory)
- Research Methods (mandatory)
- Wind Energy 2 (elective, i.e. not mandatory)
- Ocean Energy (elective, i.e. not mandatory)
- Solar Energy 2 (elective, i.e. not mandatory)
- Bio-Energy 2 (elective, i.e. not mandatory)
Semester 3
- Research Project write up (mandatory for M.Sc.)
All mandatory subjects, including the research project, plus any two of the elective lecture modules, are required for successful completion of the M.Sc. programme.
Students completing all mandatory subjects but not the research project can graduate with a Postgraduate Diploma in Renewable Energy Systems.
The M.Sc. degree spans a minimum of three semesters. This includes two semesters of teaching and one dedicated to the thesis write up.
Graduates of the M.Sc. in Renewable Energy Systems programme will be equipped with the skillset and knowledge for crucial roles in research, design and development in companies in the energy sector.
Graduates from this programme have obtained employment from a vast variety of companies throughout Ireland and further afield. Also, some graduates have decided to pursue further study in the energy domain to PhD level, at Dundalk Institute of Technology and other universities.
Graduates may progress to research PhD programmes either in DkIT or other institutions.

A second class honours degree (2.2) in an engineering or science discipline is the basic requirement. Candidates with alternative qualifications are also encouraged to apply.
The closing date for applications is usually June 20th each year however, applications may still be considered after this date. Depending on the number of applications, candidates may be short-listed, i.e. a qualified applicant is not automatically guaranteed a place.
