Course Overview

This course provides a pathway to a dynamic and globally relevant career in the construction industry, offering opportunities for professional growth and contributing to sustainable and efficient project management. The course produces graduates with the skills and knowledge of all aspects of construction over the whole life of a building or facility. Graduates will have the ability to analyse and manage projects cost effectively, equating quality and value with individual client needs.

The course has been designed in line with the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI) Accreditation Policy and Process ensuring that it meets a globally recognised standard for surveying education. DkIT will be seeking accreditation for this programme so that graduates may, subject to fulfilling experiential requirements, progress to become a Chartered Quantity Surveyor.

Throughout the course students will be sharing modules with Building Surveying, Architectural Technology and Construction Management students. They will work on projects together with these students in multi-disciplinary teams while remaining focused on their own discipline. This prepares students for the world of work where Quantity Surveyors will work with Architectural Technologists, Building Surveyors and Construction Managers to ensure the successful completion of projects.

What makes this course different

Work Placement

In Year 3 students undertake an industry work placement where they gain important contacts within the industry to help them in their future careers.

Shared Modules

Work in interdisciplinary teams with students from Building Surveying, Construction Management and Quantity Surveying.

Understanding the Industry

Quantity surveyors are the cost managers of construction. They are initially involved with the capital expenditure phase of a building or facility, which is the feasibility, design and construction phases, but they can also be involved with the extension, refurbishment, maintenance and demolition of a facility. Quantity surveyors manage the costs relating to construction projects sustainably and holistically, seeking to minimise waste on a building project and enhance value for money while achieving the required standards and quality.

The profession of Quantity Surveyor has been identified as an occupation in short supply and difficult to fill and is included in the government's Critical Skills Occupation List.

Career Opportunities

Graduates will find employment as a Quantity Surveyor which is a role protected by the Building Control Act. It is a profession that was recently identified as being in short supply nationally. Graduates will be involved in providing technical advice on construction costs, construction law economics, and cost management.
