Course Overview

The aim of the course is to equip learners to develop the knowledge and skills to support high quality learning in a wide range of contexts. It is designed as a sound preparation for higher level study in the broad social and health sciences and education fields. The course is delivered via a combination of face-to-face workshops and online activities. This course is designed as a preparation for higher-level study in the broad social and health sciences and education fields. It is aimed at those who wish to pursue postgraduate and/or professional qualifications at levels 8 or 9 who have not been in education for some time and would like to upskill in academic writing and research.

The course comprises two modules. One focuses on academic writing and scholarship and the other on research methods. More specifically the course aims:

  • To foster an understanding of scholarship and develop the skills needed to engage with, use and contribute to it,
  • To develop the skills needs to write well academically,
  • To promote critical and analytical engagement with literature and evidence,
  • To critically consider the research methodologies used in the social and health sciences.

Course Delivery and Modules

The course is delivered via a combination of face-to-face workshops, online activities and 1:1 tutor support. 

The course typically includes 3 Saturdays of face-to-face workshops over a semester.  1:1 tutorials are arranged at times to suit the learner and can be face-to-face, online or over the phone, as suits.  The rest of the programme is delivered online. 

This module aims to support students develop the transferable academic skills necessary for success in future study. It focuses on information literacy, critical thinking and academic writing.

This module provides a thorough grounding in research approaches and paradigms used in the social and behavioural sciences. Students will learn to interpret and synthesise existing research to inform decision making.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a Level 7 qualification in a relevant discipline. Equivalent recognition may be given through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process on an individual case-by-case basis to candidates who have not yet achieved this academic standard but who can demonstrate significant relevant professional experience.
