Course Overview
The aim of the programme is to enhance nurses’ evidence based knowledge, skills and competencies for the challenges of supporting individuals experiencing acute or chronic conditions of the respiratory system.
This programme offers registered nurses an opportunity to engage in evidence-based, patient centred, and responsive respiratory care. This care spans a continuum from health promotion, risk reduction, and self -management to proactive assessment, monitoring, and the management of the individual with critical needs.
Nurses undertaking this programme will critically examine the assessment and management of respiratory disorders within the context of their own practice so that they can provide timely, optimal, collaborative, and compassionate care to enhance client outcomes and improve quality of life. This programme offers registered nurses an opportunity to engage in evidence-based, patient centred, and responsive respiratory care. This care spans a continuum from health promotion, risk reduction, and self -management to proactive assessment, monitoring, and the management of the individual with critical needs.

This programme is approved by the NMBI (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland).
This programme is suitable for nurses from various disciplines including those working in the Intellectual Disability and General settings
Course Delivery and Modules
The programme is delivered using a blended learning approach, which includes face-to-face lectures (approx 4 full days) on campus in DkIT, live online lectures (from 09.00hrs to 17.00hrs) recorded lectures as well as directed and independent study.
The content of the Certificate in Adult Respiratory Nursing Practice will include:
- Examination of Disorders of the Respiratory System
- Evidence-based Care and Management
- Challenges of Living with a Respiratory Illness/Disorder.

Entry requirements
Participants must be:
- Registered Nurse with NMBI
- Currently employed in health care provision
- Applicants will normally hold a level 8 qualification.
- Applicants who do not have a level 8 qualification may apply for entry to the programme in accordance with the procedures outlined in the DkIT Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy. Learn more about RPL at DkIT
- Due to the blended learning delivery within this course students should have access to a PC / Mac, a headset with a mic, and a broadband internet connection from home, so as to be able to fully participate in the course
- Basic IT skills essential
- Applicants may be interviewed
- Applicants should have a minimum of 1 years post registration experience
