Course Overview

This is a 3-year level 7 Degree Apprenticeship with 70% of time spent in the workplace and 30% in DkIT. Its an ‘Earn while you Learn’ programme – apprentices are employed and paid while they are registered on this programme.

You must already be employed on a Manufacturing Engineering Apprenticeship contract before you can apply for the programme.

What makes this course different

Career Opportunities

If you are a Production Operator/Technician who wants to re-train or train in the Manufacturing or Engineering sectors, then this course might be for you. A Manufacturing Engineer is required to enhance operational excellence within the production areas to optimise exiting processes, implement new processes and ensure that production goals are met.

Course Delivery and Modules

Students will spend one semester per year at DkIT campus in Dundalk (either Sept-Dec or Jan-May). Classes are delivered face-to-face with approximately 28 hours per week of class contact. Classes will be a mix of lectures, tutorials, workshops, and laboratory classes. The remaining time will be spent with the employer (Jan-July or May-Nov).

Please note: First-year students must complete an induction and therefore start in mid-July (for September start in DkIT) or mid-November (for January start in DkIT).

Education Progression

BEng (Honours) in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (available in DkIT, ATU Galway, TUS Midwest, MTU Cork and ATU Sligo).  This is a one-year add-on programme.

Entry requirements

Year 1:

For CAO applicants, a minimum of 160 points, Pass (O6 or better) in 5 Leaving Certificate subjects, two of which must be Maths and a language (English or Irish). Leaving Certificate (Applied) is not suitable.

For FET graduates, a cognate QQI-FET level 5 or 6 qualification with Leaving Certificate Mathematics is required.

Mature students (over 23 years) do not require a Leaving Certificate but must pass a company interview.

Year 2:

RPL review for applicants who have completed the first year of a cognate engineering programme plus 1 year of relevant industry experience.

Year 3:

Higher Certificate in Manufacturing Engineering (Apprenticeship) or a cognate Higher Certificate in Engineering plus 2 years relevant industry experience.
