Apply to Postgraduate Courses

Applications for Postgraduate Courses at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) must be made online through the DkIT Online Applications Portal.

New directions are emerging in postgraduate studies with an increasing number of taught and research-based postgraduate programmes now available.

The greatest difference between our taught and research-based postgraduate programmes is the level of responsibility you as the student has to take on. There is a much greater responsibility on students carrying out research programmes, as each programme is individually tailored.

Taught Postgraduate Programmes

At DkIT we offer a range of taught master’s programmes. The award is usually based on examinations following the prescribed programme of study. The examinations may include extended essays or reports, project work, or a dissertation in addition to, or in place of, conventional written papers. The summer vacation of the final year of study is frequently devoted to the preparation and submission of a dissertation related to a specific aspect of the programme of study.

Taught Master programmes normally entail at least one year of full-time study or two years of part-time study. The academic year usually commences in September, however, it should be noted that some programmes have different start dates.

Information on how to apply can be found in the 'How To Apply' section on the individual course pages (see links above).

Entry Requirements

For full entry requirements for our Postgraduate Taught Programmes please see the individual course pages. In general, Postgraduate applications will be considered from candidates who:

  • hold an NQAI Level 8 award or equivalent (at minimum Second Class Honours, Grade 2 level) in an area of study cognate to the proposed study area or
  • hold such other qualifications as may be acceptable to the Programme Board for the purposes of proceeding to a specific Master Degree or
  • have achieved outstanding merit in a specialist artistic field as evidenced by an accumulated body of published/performed work, a scholarly approach to their subject area, and significant national and/or international reputation and this standard to be assessed by the Programme Board.

Candidates may register for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) once a satisfactorily a period of enrolment at Master’s level is completed and provided the research project is suitable for research at doctoral level. Candidates must submit a detailed written proposal at the time of application. Candidates are therefore advised to get in touch with the relevant department or Research Centre to discuss their research interests in advance of making an application. This will ensure that the Institute can provide appropriate supervision, resources and facilities to support the research project. Candidates holding foreign academic qualifications must submit certified copies of all relevant qualifications held to date at the time of application and demonstrate a minimum proficiency in English at 6.5 on the IELTS scale or equivalent, in order to ensure that there is no language barrier between research learner and supervisor, which might hinder the research activity at the onset and that the learner is capable of providing written work, as and when required.

How to Apply to Taught Postgraduate Programmes
